Refer to slides :

Millennium goal 5 : Improve maternal health.

Target 06 :  Reduce by three quarters the maternity mortality ratio.

On Millennium goal 5 (Target 06) read :

Analysis of financial leakage : health.

In-depth analysis of the causes of financial leakage: health.

Analysis of the Implementation Plan , Goal 5 (target 06).

Refer as well to file 05.62  public health structures foreseen in integrated development projects under the Model.

Target 06 of Millennium Goal 5 has just two indicators:

-indicator 16 – the rate of maternal mortality.

-Indicator 17 – the proportion of births attended by qualified personnel.

During your Analysis of the Implementation Plan , Goal 5 (target 06)  you made acquaintance with other factors linked to maternal mortality. They are cited in the UNIFEM report Making the MDGs Work for All  and refer  to the services which would be necessary (in your project area) to achieve a reduction in maternal mortality.

Basic structures made available to the community by integrated development projects include :

Hygiene education (health clubs) at tank commission level and in schools. (Details : block 4, section 2,  1. Health clubs.)

Reduction of the work load on women. ( Details : block 5, Section 1: Gender.)

1. Research.

On one page take the list of services from your analysis of the Implementation Plan, Goal 5 ( target 06) and describe which services you listed are provided by integrated development projects.

2. Opinion.

On one page take the list of services from your analysis of the Implementation Plan, Goal  5 (target 06) which are NOT provided under integrated development projects and explain why.

The UNIFEM report Making the MDGs Work for All stresses that role of men in the community in general concerning maternal mortality. The report discusses the use of  contraceptive measures (men and women), family planning, sexually transmissible diseases, genital mutilation of women and more generally the empowerment of women.

Difficulties are expected in getting men to participate in the hygiene education clubs foreseen by the Model.

3. Opinion.

On two pages write four paragraphs on how you would try to resolve the problem of men’s participation in your project area in relation to the use of contraceptive methods (men and women), family planning , sexually  transmissible diseases, and female genital mutilation. Keep the role that traditional, religious and public authorities could in your opinion play  in mind.

We have seen there are some aspects concerning maternal health which are typical of integrated development projects. There are others which are more the responsibility of regional and national health authorities. One of the lines of demarcation is that preventive action at social and community level (excluding immunisation campaigns) belong to integrated development projects, while other actions are the responsibility of the health authorities.

4. Opinion.

On one page, express your opinion on this subject..
